This past weekend the weather finally felt like spring so it was time to clean the grill and fire it up for the first time since winter.
I decided I was going to try grilling meatballs, I’ve been wanting to try it, something different. I mixed them up the way I always make them minus the breadcrumbs. I cubed up some Fontina cheese and placed a hunk right in the middle. For my grilled meatballs I used ground turkey because that’s what I had, but you could use any ground meat mixture that you like. Just make sure your grill is nice and clean, rub some oil on the grates and because I used ground turkey I sprayed my meatballs beforehand with olive oil. I had no fancy gadgets I just plopped them right onto the grill, but here’s the thing, don’t get anxious and start moving them, let them form a crust on the bottom. For extra precaution I checked the bottom using a sharp edged spatula before I flipped them over.
I have a gas grill and I put all my burners on low. I made a roasted tomato and garlic sauce to serve with my meatballs, a great combination that enhanced all the flavors of the entire dish. We loved how they tasted! The slightly smokey flavor the grill added was a plus along with the nice crispy outer crust that formed. Moist and flavorful inside with gooey Fontina cheese oozing out. This would be great for a party, you could even make them as kabobs!
And now for my exciting news! I wrote an ebook/cookbook! I can hardly believe it myself but I really did! Within a couple of days I will be releasing it here on my blog. So please come back and read all about it, I can’t wait to share it with you!
Ironically, and I didn’t even plan it this way, both my favorite meatball recipe and the sauce I made here will be featured in my ebook. So feel free to use your own special meatball recipe along with your favorite sauce, but I really encourage you to make some meatballs on the grill next time next time you fire yours up, I promise you will love them!
If you haven’t already done so please “like” my Facebook page or share my post over there, I’ll be giving away 10 copies to my Facebook friends. In the very near future I’ll also be having a giveaway right here on my blog for some free copies.
Thank you all for your support!
I just bought your e book My Italian Sauces and expected to find the recipe for Grilled Italian Meatball with Fontina in the book – but I didn’t have any luck. Did I just miss it. If so, please tell what page it was on. If it isn’t there, how can I get the recipe. Will appreciate your reply.
Hi Nancy, My meatball recipe is under Sunday Sauce in the ebook, you can put breadcrumbs into the grilled meatballs as well and of course just stick your cube of cheese in the center as you form them. Thank you for buying the book! Marie

I love the photos – the meatballs look delicious! Where is the actual recipe? Congratulations!
Brenda it’s not on my blog, I just put the recipe in my new ebook.
I have a meatball cooker for the grill. It is the best. It is a long basket-type thing that holds meatballs in place. Supposed to be for oven but we use on grill also. Definitely going to try this recipe this weekend. Thanks so much for great recipes. Can’t wait for cookbook. NJ girls rock!
LOVELY CREATIVE RECIPES AND BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR COOKBOOK.
Congratulations! You inspire us all and deserve only the very best wishes. WOW! How exciting. Meatballs dont look bad either! We love meatballs on crusty buns with sauce and cheese… but Fontina! This weekend…..
Marie, these sound so good. I have gotten to like ground turkey, it took a while but finally found I can still make tasty things with it. I also love fontina, works better than mozzarella in certain recipes, like this one. Congrats once again on the book. xo
I was looking forward to your grilled meatballs, since you teased me on facebook!
Weren’t you the one who got me to grill a turkey breast?
Congrats on the new ebook! Very exciting! even more than grilled meatballs!
xo
Congrats on the cookbook – I’m sure it was a lot of work but you should be proud! Way to go!
Now a question — I’ve cruised all over your blog trying to find the meatball recipe – I can find no link. Please, I want to make them – where is the recipe??
Thanks,
roberta
Oh My! These looks absolutely delicious, and so nice they can be cooked outside. I wish I had some right now!!!! Congrats on the e-book!
I am so thrilled for the launch of your e-book Marie and will be one of the first to read it and endorse it! Love these meatballs made of ground turkey! I’ve been using turkey more often and can hardly taste the difference! The fontina inside makes an average meatball and outstanding meatball. Plus, on the grill . . . I never would have thought of that! Perfect-o!
Love all the beautiful crispy grill marks on those meatballs, Marie. Leave it to you to think of a new way to prepare one of our favorite things. I know your new book will be a smashing success. Well done!
First of all, congratulations, Marie. I can’t think of another person whose cookbook I’d rather read than yours. I know it will be popular, just like your blog. These grilled meatballs are just another indication of your inventiveness with ideas we never think of.
I love your recipes and I will definitely being trying these once we get Spring. Live in MN and snowing today on April 10th. UGH. Tired of winter:-( Love your blog and would love to win your e book! Thanks for sharing your news
So thrilled for you and cannot wait for the release of your ebook! I have made many recipes off of your site and they truly are family favorites!
The meatballs sound wonderful, and I love the idea of making them on the grill. I have never tried it, but you have inspired me. Congratulations on your WONDERFUL news. You must be thrilled – I wish you great success!
Pat, Yes there are no breadcrumbs, I just use extra romano in mine to bind them!
Marie, did I read correctly that there are no bread crumbs in your grilled meatballs? If so, that is good news for me as I have a few family members who are gluten sensitive and can’t have grain/bread products, so a breadcrumb free meatball would be a treat they could enjoy! I also like using the leaner ground turkey meat.
I am so excited about your new e-book and can’t wait to see it ad make some delicious sauces form your recipes! Congratulations and best of luck with this new venture!
