"MOONSTRUCK" EGGS!!

Sharing is caring!

I’m a sucker for romantic comedy’s, and “Moonstruck” is one of my all time favorites! It’s a story about love, life, passion, and strong family bonds. Being Italian American I can certainly relate to many of the scenes in the movie, which make me laugh every time I watch it.

Not only do I love the music, and the characters in “Moonstruck” I also love some of the food scenes. Families sitting together sharing coffee, eating oatmeal deep in conversation. Loretta and her Mom Rose, cooking up some eggs for breakfast in the midst of discussing important life issues.

Today is March 17th, not only is it St.Patrick’s day, but it’s also my wedding anniversary! Yes, 2 Italians got married on St. Patrick’s day many “moons” ago!! Married at age 19, and still going strong!

So, for a little anniversary breakfast I decided to make some “Moonstruck eggs”. If you never cooked an egg in a little olive oil, you have to try it. The eggs take on a new dimension of flavor.
In the movie they had some red pepper on the side, I sauteed red pepper, green pepper, onions, and sliced potatoes for some nice color and flavor to go with the eggs.

Here is the recipe!

Take some good Italian bread, make a hole in the middle.
Pour a little olive oil in a pan and brown one side of bread, flip it over when browned, crack your eggs in it, and cook them like you want to. I didn’t flip them over cause I thought the picture would look messy, so I kept them sunnyside up, and placed a cover over them to cook the yoke.

It’s nice way to make a simple egg just a bit more fancy!!

Happy Anniversary “T” xxooxo!!

I have always wanted to try making these eggs since seeing the movie (countless times). Last night my husband brought a lovely fresh ciabatta home and this morning I wanted to make the eggs but couldn’t work it out. So I googled it and couldn’t beleive I found a recipe for them – THANK YOU SO MUCH – going to try these for breakfast tomorrow.
Greetings from Sunny South Africa – my husband is Irish and I am Italian – so we are a good mix ?

  2. I’m late to the party, but I’m new to your blog. I’ve always wanted to make these after seeing Moonstruck. And until recently, I couldnt figure out why she was cooking ketchup in the frying pan. Duh…roasted peppers!

  3. Thank you so much for posting this! Moonstruck is one of my favorite movies of all time. I can’t believe you thought of the same scene I’ve been drooling over for years.

I’m going to link you to my blog, if you don’t mind!

  4. Moonstruck is my all time favorite movie! I use to go to the real Cammareri Brothers Bakery and was so sad it closed ;-(
    Hugs, Pat

  5. First of all, happy anniversary, and many more! (What’s your secret, you two?!) Second of all, my mom made this all the time when I was growing up! She called it “an egg in a frame.” She used a shot glass to cut the hole in the middle of the bread. She never put peppers with it as in the movie (and your beautiful photo), though—but maybe I just don’t remember that part.

I can’t believe you found the scene on You Tube!!! As I think you know, I adore Moonstruck, too. For me, I think it’s because it portrays something I really didn’t have (extended family around), and yet it was so familiar. When I first saw the movie and saw her cooking those eggs, I almost died. I thought my mom was the only one who made them!

  6. Thank you for all your comments everyone, and your wishes for a “Happy Anniversary”
    Marie

  7. Fantastic! It looks wonderful.

  8. Hi Marie and “T” – Happy Anniversary!

I agree on cooking the eggs in olive oil! And thanks for sharing the movie clip! Great post!

  9. What a wonderful simple dish this is to put a twist on your morning eggs, with some good olive oil.

While I wish my cooking was better, I do surround myself with people who are great cooks so I at least can continue to eat well!

Your blog is always such a pleasure to visit, and consistently is sure to make my mouth water, appetite grow, and a pleasing joy to my eyes.

    Happy Anniversary…and Happy Spring!

  10. Buon Anniversario, Marie e marito! Couldn’t ‘cha have just waited two more days to get married on St. Joseph’s Day, huh? (LOL!)

I’ve wanted to try that egg in toast dish that Olympia Dukakis made. In an interview with her, I saw that people ask her all the time about that recipe and, being Greek, she’d never made or heard of it before doing to movie.

  11. so simple and so nice!

  12. A simple and tasty looking light meal. Happy anniversary!
